OLB Hunter Hillenmeyer: Writing on the Wall for Former Starter

Hunter Hillenmeyer Profile

While it was indeed interesting to see three different linebackers listed as the co-starters at the strong-side position when the Bears released their official depth chart Tuesday, it may have been just as interesting to see who was not listed.

Pisa Tinoisamoa, Nick Roach and Jamar Williams have all been taking reps with the starting defense in training camp, although Tinoisamoa is expected to win that job since he has a legitimate NFL resume. But the fact that Hunter Hillenmeyer, who has started 56 games at that spot since coming to the Bears in 2003, is listed as the second-team middle linebacker – and nothing else – is newsworthy. Hillenmeyer started the first seven games at the Sam position last year before getting injured and ultimately replaced by Roach, and the Tinoisamoa signing in the offseason most likely ended his run as a starter in Chicago.

With younger linebackers like Roach, Williams and rookie Marcus Freeman offering more play-making ability and better speed on special teams, Hillenmeyer could be a cutting-room floor casualty after the preseason.
